@blog: Transparent PCB

Hardware design is usually about hiding the complexity. But when you manufacture a completely transparent PCB, you want to show off every single trace.

I wanted to build the ultimate, do-it-all development board without hiding the beautiful engineering beneath opaque fiberglass. Here is a look inside my transparent ESP32-S3 DevKit. If you also want a cool PCB like this one, use the services of PCBWAY to get one.

The Form Factor You Know, With Way More Power

At first glance, the silhouette looks exactly like a classic Arduino Uno. But look closer through the clear substrate, and you will find the heart of the board: an ESP32-S3.

Going transparent completely changes how you approach routing. Every trace is visible from both sides, turning the circuit design into functional art. I chose the Arduino form factor for nostalgia and shield compatibility, but packed it with modern dual-core wireless power.

Swiss Army Knife Connectivity

I wanted this board to talk to absolutely everything. Instead of stacking annoying shields, I integrated a massive array of peripherals directly onto the transparent board:

  1. Long-Range Radio: Onboard LoRa for ultra-long-distance telemetry.
  2. 2.4GHz Wireless: An nRF24L01 module for low-power local mesh networks.
  3. Infrared: An IR receiver to capture signals from standard remotes.
  4. Sensors & Controls: Built-in environment sensors, tactile potentiometers, and exposed I2C headers.

Dual Screen Diagnostics

What good is a massive sensor suite without real-time data? This DevKit features a vibrant main TFT display for rich user interfaces and graphics. Next to it, a secondary I2C screen handles dedicated system debugging, boot logs, or network status.

Seeing the glowing screens contrast against the completely clear circuit board looks like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. It is the ultimate sandbox for prototyping IoT, robotics, and edge AI projects.
